A schoolbook can preserve more than the subject printed on its cover. HD SOUTH’s Vintage School Books exhibit, announced through November 16, 2026, draws on the museum’s readers and texts to offer a glimpse of earlier classroom learning. The display is included with museum admission.
Look for what a book asks its reader to know, how an exercise is explained and which examples are treated as ordinary. A geography lesson or arithmetic problem can suggest questions about a period, but a single volume cannot stand in for every child’s education or experience. Read the labels for the context of the particular material on display.

If visiting with someone from another generation, compare memories without assuming they match the books in front of you. What did each person carry to school, write in or share? A familiar-looking object can begin a conversation while also revealing how different two apparently similar classrooms might have been.
Confirm current museum hours, admission and exhibition availability with HD SOUTH before traveling. The photograph accompanying this story shows the museum’s classroom exhibit in 2016 and is explicitly archival. It provides a real historical view of the museum, not an image of the temporary schoolbook display or a guarantee that the room remains arranged the same way.
